ANKARA (Turkey), June 19:
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has decided to establish a school
of Ottoman-Malay studies at one of the foremost universities in the country.
The International
Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) president Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim believed
Erdogan was agreeable to the study centre to be either at the Fatih Sultan
Mehmet Vaqif University in Istanbul or the University of Istanbul which is over
500 years old.
“The
agreement is the result of a courtesy call and an hour of talks with Erdogan at
his office here today (Wednesday),” said Rais after a courtesy call by IIUM’s
top management at the Turkish Prime Minister’s Office here yesterday.
In
addition, IIUM’s honorary doctorate certificate conferred on Erdogan during an
official visit to Malaysia in January was presented to him during the courtesy
visit.
Rais,
who is also the Malaysian Government Adviser on Social and Cultural Affairs,
said IIUM would work together and have further discussions with the Fatih
Sultan Mehmet Vaqif University in the near future because coincidentally, IIUM
was organising the International Conference and Workshop on Waqf Management in
2014 at the university.
Talking about the visit and collaboration with several
universities in Turkey, he said so far, IIUM had signed memorandum of
understanding with not less than 15 universities in Turkey in various fields.
